Types of Roofs
 There are two types of roofs, flat and pitched (sloped). Generally speaking,
most commercial, industrial, city, and apartment buildings have flat or slightly sloped roofs. Most suburban homes have pitched roofs.
A large number of new flat roofs are covered with a single ply membrane made of waterproof modified bitumen. The material is rolled out while being heated. It is adhered to a subsurface of insulation or is directly installed over an old smooth roof system. The seams are heat welded. And all pipes and pertrusions are sealed using the modified bitumen.
Most residential, suburban roofs are covered by shingles. To apply shingles, we first
lay, cut, and tack 3-foot strips of 15lb roofing felt lengthwise over the entire roof
surface. Then, starting from the bottom edge, we nail overlapping rows of shingles to
the roof. Wherever two roof surfaces intersect or shingles reach a vent pipe or
chimney , "flashing" is installed over the joints to make them water tight
